FRANCIS KURKDJIAN
“One of the edgiest perfumers in the one-off niche” New York Times
I think we Armenians should know this talented artist of scents as he indeed has an interesting life story and amazing profession where he actually succeeded to his best, making his way not only to the world market of perfumery but also to the millions of hearts around the world.
I am always happy and proud to hear last names with Armenian ending (yan/ian) amid foreign/international public and cool events , so my sniffing pleasure doubled the day I was proudly holding a bottle of APOM and breathing in a heavenly good scent with notes of orange blossom and ylang-ylang.
Fracis was only 15 when he decided to become a perfumer . At the age of 25 he already made his first scent for Jean Paul Gaultier, Le mâle.
Soon afer he was already making his perfumery creations for Yves-Saint Laurent, Guerlain, Christian Dior , Lanvin, Salvatore Ferragamo and many others.
When in 2001 he was awarded with Prix François Coty award for his life’s work he was in the beginning of his thirties. He thought he had to experience the scents of the world. For several years Francis traveled with a mobile laboratory where he carried his essences and met renowned perfumers and many of his future partners.
“Time is the ultimate luxury,” he said in an interview. “That is why I have revived the 18th-century tradition of the traveling perfumer.”
According to the New York Times, Mr. Kurkdjian is „one of the edgiest players in the one-off niche“.
He is French-Armenian . “Paris was at the heart of my inspiration,” he says. “My travels take me away, but they also bring me back to my City and its heterogeneous population, to its light and the shade of its monuments, the grey of its rooftops and the bursts of magic as its golden spires puncture its incredible skyline here and there. Paris inspires the universe of my House: grey, zinc and gold.”
“Kurkdjian’s bespoke scents, conceived, blended and matured over 6 to 10 months, are priced at $10,000 for two 60-milliliter flasks, hand-engraved with a name or personal message” NY TIMES tells in its 2008 November issue.”
In 2009, he finally opened his own perfume house, Maison Francis Kurkdjian on rue Alger, near Place Vendôme and created his Maison Francis Kurkdjian (2009) . The interiors of the boutique is a stunningly beautiful installation by Jean-Hugues de Chatillon, a scenographer for the Paris opera and ballet. His inspirations were the covered passages of Paris, the city which also inspired Fransic for his lifetime creations.
